عمان. is the IDN ccTLD for Oman. It is managed by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA).[1]

The domain .عمان is represented in ASCII-compatible encoding according to the IDNA specification as “xn--mgb9awbf”. The individual Unicode code points that comprise this string are U+0639 U+0645 U+0627 U+0646.

In Arabic language, the string has a meaning equivalent and pronunciation to “Oman” in English. The string is expressed using the Arabic script.

Delegation History[edit | edit source]

In 2002, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) was established “to regulate the Telecommunication Sector within the Sultanate of Oman”.

In 2007, the Royal Decree No. 64/2007 was issued to update the Telecommunications Regulatory Act. The applicants state that the "responsibility for the عمان. (.oman) IDN ccTLD falls under the TRA’s jurisdiction"

On August 24, 2010, an application was made to the “IDN Fast Track” process to have the string “عمان” recognised as representing Oman.

On October 4, 2010, review by the IDN Fast Track DNS Stability Panel found that "the applied-for strings ... present none of the threats to the stability or security of the DNS identified in [the IDN Fast Track implementation plan] ... and present an acceptably low risk of user confusion". The request for the string to represent Oman was subsequently approved.

On February 7, 2012, TRA commenced a request to ICANN for delegation of .عمان as a TLD, which was granted.

Rules and Restrictions[edit | edit source]

To register a domain name under the top-level domain .عمان, the applicant is required to be Omani, one of the state's administrative apparatus units, other public juristic persons, enterprises and companies, civil or professional associations, trade unions or non-profit organizations licensed to exercise their activities by the competent authorities in Oman.[2]

A domain name under the top-level .عمان is made up of a set of Arabic alphabets of not less than (2) two and not exceeding (63) sixty-three letters, or its equivalence of Arabic alphabets and numbers. The domain name may include a hyphen (-) provided that it is not located at the beginning or the end of the name.[2]
